Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation recently received a $5,000 grant from the Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation. Thanks to this grant, TRF will be able to enhance its Second Chances program, a unique and pioneering program where inmates build life skills while participating in a vocational training program as they provide supervised care to our retired racehorses.
(West Chester, PA –OCTOBER 8, 2025): The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) is pleased to award $5,000 to Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation to be used for its Second Chances program.
“Maggie Sweet, Executive Director, states, “The TRF was founded in 1983, making it the oldest and largest Thoroughbred aftercare organization in the United States, We are dedicated to providing dignified lifetime care for retired racehorses, most of whom remain with us for 15 to 20 years. Some arrive after a second or third post-racing career, while others come directly from the racetrack. No matter where their journey begins, it ends with the safe landing TRF is proud to provide. TRF collaborates with correctional facilities in eight states to provide vocational training to inmates who, in turn, care for horses that are not suitable for second athletic careers.
